Unrests in the three southern-border provinces are getting intense since 2004, and it has been 15 years until now that the areas are still in these situations and looking for a way to make peace. A number of children grow along with these situations, and they consider them as a part of their life because they have to live to be alive, and they adapt and try to look for new things to fulfil what they perceive from the outside world. They overlook the unrest to hopes in their future life. A short file is another media they try to connect and convey to local people and the outsiders

Deep South Young Filmmaker Project

“Deep South Young Filmmaker Project” is sponsored by the safe and creative media development fund and the  Thai Film Foundation, with a concept to develop and support youths with age ranged from 15-25 years in the three southern-border provinces including Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat to present imaginations and ideas of the new-generation people through creation of a short film, reflecting occurrences in the area that link with current situations. It can be related to society, arts, culture and history and they create it in a form of a short film for 10 titles.

The project is open for youths in team with 5 members/ team. Only 10 teams were selected to join activities from the process of script development to workshops during 26-30 June 2019. Lecturers were directors and experts in filmmaking field, who were famous in Thailand and foreign countries to share and exchange knowledge before each team entered the production and post-production process until a film is completed. Meanwhile, each team would have a mentor whose works are related to media and who are interested in creative media in the three southern-border provinces.

A southern boy’s film

7 December 2019 was the day 10 short films were premiered, and they were the works of inexperienced filmmakers through learning with the lecturers, the professional film producers at domestic and international level, for 4 months. They were instructed seriously and created works in various forms with the same goal, which was to tell the stories of the three southern-border provinces in perspectives that outsiders have never seen. Every short film is created from efforts to build up understanding between insiders and outsiders in the three southern-border provinces, which can lead to changes in a better way. Furthermore, it is the space to express potentials of new-generation youths who are proud of stories in their areas and hope that there will be perspectives in various dimensions different from the same ones that have been acknowledged for long time.
